The ‘Znasz li ten kraj?…’ Polish Culture and Language Knowledge Contest is a project developed by the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Lviv, and is an initiative like no other in Ukraine.

The contest is certainly among the best examples of how education, culture and competition can go hand in hand to promote a strong cultural and linguistic identity beyond the Polish borders. The initiative inspires and influences new generations of Poles living in Ukraine, enabling them to learn more about Poland and her rich culture.

It is also worth noting that, in addition to its educational value, the contest is also an opportunity for students to compete with one another, which is equally important. Not only can they expand their knowledge, but also gain new experiences and skills by way of fair competition.

The contest consists of two main parts: written and oral. The written part involves such challenges as a grammar test, a short writing assignment and a culture test centred around Polish traditions, history, culture and geography.

The second part of the contest is an oral presentation on a certain subject combined with a series of questions from the jury. This presents participants with an opportunity to learn various interesting facts about Poland, which may inspire them to continue on their journey.

The contest also involves a variety of activities for children and young people, which add to the overall experience. These include crafts, theatre, visual arts and dance classes, journalism workshops, physical and community building exercises as well as first aid training.

At the same time, teachers looking after the participants can attend workshops and lectures given by prominent experts on Polish culture and language.

The project is supported by the Polish Language Methodology Centre in Drohobych, Podkarpackie Centre for Teacher Education in Rzeszów, Przemyśl Branch, POLONICUM Centre of the Polish Language and Culture for Foreigners and the Faculty of Polish Studies of the University of Warsaw.

Over the course of the three-day event, its participants learn more about one another and form bonds through play, competition and participation in educational and entertainment activities. It is not only an opportunity for them to test their knowledge, but also make new friends, share experiences and support one another.
