The outdoor game “Through the Streets of Lviv” and sport activities LKS Pogoń Lwów

In May 2010, the first edition of the outdoor game ‘Through the Streets of Lviv’ took place, providing an opportunity to deepen knowledge about the history of Lviv. This recurring event has gained recognition among both residents and visitors of the city. Organized by the cycling section of LKS Pogoń Lviv, the game focuses on both scenic and cognitive aspects, engaging both pedestrian and cycling groups.

Each edition of the game is centered around a new theme, attempting to uncover and popularize different aspects of Lviv’s history and culture. Themes such as sports, theater, cinema, ‘The Case of Gorgonowa,’ ‘Lviv Schools of Our Grandparents,’ or ‘Adventures of a Boy from Bohdanivka’ become a pretext for discovering the city’s mysteries. Teams of four individuals solve tasks related to specific topographic points in Lviv, giving the competition both a competitive and educational character.

However, ‘Through the Streets of Lviv’ is just one of many initiatives carried out by the Lviv Sports Club Pogoń. This club, revived after a 70-year hiatus, continues the traditions of one of the most distinguished football clubs in interwar Poland.

In the spring of 1904, the Football and Gymnastics Club IV Gymnasium was established at the IV Gymnasium in Lviv. Operating under the name LKS Pogoń from 1907 to 1939, it became one of the most distinguished football clubs in interwar Poland. In 1938, the Union of Polish Sports Associations honored Lviv’s Pogoń with the title of the ‘Best and Most Distinguished Sports Club in Poland.’ After the war, the traditions of ‘Pogoń’ were taken over by various clubs where Lviv players performed, such as Polonia Bytom, Pogoń Szczecin, Piast Gliwice, and Odra Opole.

Since its reactivation in January 2009, ‘Pogoń Lviv’ has been actively involved in various activities. The first-team players compete in the Ukrainian Third Football League, and the club runs a school for Polish children, organizes competitions for amateurs, and actively participates in the life of Poles in Ukraine. The club takes pride in having a Polish inscription on the jerseys and the original pre-war name ‘Pogoń Lviv.

The club also organizes a football tournament called the ‘Polish Amateur League.’ This initiative, involving amateur teams formed at Polish community centers, Catholic parishes, and schools in the Lviv region, promotes sports integration and a spirit of competition.

The football school is highly popular among children from Polish families. The club is often invited to tournaments and friendly matches with the most popular football clubs in Poland and Ukraine, a testament to the recognition and respect for its heritage.

The club community focuses not only on sports but also on social aspects. ‘Pogoń Lviv’ is also actively involved in charitable activities, coordinating assistance for refugees and people in need, especially those of Polish origin living in the Lviv region.

The Lviv Sports Club Pogoń is not just a football team. It is a place that integrates the community, promotes knowledge of Lviv’s history and traditions, and actively supports those in need. Its history is not only a return to roots but also the building of bridges between generations and cultures
